Four Quartets
by Bryan Johanson
Four Quartets consists of a cycle of four works for string quartet. Like any multi-movement work, the Four Quartets explore the relationship between each of the instruments and each of the formal parts. When taken as a cycle, the first quartet, Never odd or even is the most formal and introductory in nature; the second quartet, Notes on a Vaulted Sky, serves as the expressive slow movement; the third quartet, Los Abejarucos, is the puckish scherzo; and the fourth quartet, Hidden Quartets,
is the cycle's finale.
