The Florestan Trio Harold Gray, piano Carol Sindell, violin Hamilton Cheifetz, cello
The Florestan Trio has received international
acclaim for its brilliant and dynamic playing. Since joining the faculty
of Portland State University in 1977 as Artists-in-Residence, the
Trio has concertized throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan,
where their playing was described as "...positively overflowing with
life and energy."
The Florestan Trio became the first American chamber music group to perform at the Tama Parthenon near Tokyo. They have also been presented in concerts at Mainichi Broadcasting System's Galaxy Hall in Osaka and at the International Center in Hiroshima.
In addition to their chamber music performances, the members of the Florestan Trio are heard frequently as soloists with orchestra and in recital. Concerto appearances by the Trio have included the Oregon Symphony and many other American orchestras.
The Florestan Trio has received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. The first produced concerts by the Trio which were broadcast nationally in the United States on PBS-TV stations. The second grant provided for the commission of a new trio by American composer Tomas Svoboda. The Florestan Trio has also been featured on National Public Radio's "Performance Today."
Harold Gray, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, received degrees in piano from Florida State University, and he has given chamber music reditals with such artists as Barry Tuckwell, Ko Iwasaki, Richard Burgin, and Mischa Mischakoff. He has also been associated with numerous summer festivals in North America and Europe. Mr. Gray has performed as soloist with the Oregon Symphony, and he has recorded for the Orion, Genesis, and Desmar labels.
Carol Sindell began her studies with Josef Gingold at age seven, and in 1962 she was accepted as a student of Jascha Heifetz. She made her professional debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at age eleven, and in 1974 she made her New York debut in Carnegie Recital Hall. Ms. Sindell has performed as a soloist and with ensembles in Europe, Japan, Canada, and the United States, and she has been a featured artist on the Music from Marlboro series and Chamber Music Northwest Music Festival.
Hamilton Cheifetz has received critical acclaim for his solo compact discs, Songs from the Cello and Jubilatum. A native of Chicago, he studied with Janos Starker at Indiana University. He has performed at the White House and the Sydney Opera House and has toured with Music from Marlboro and the Paul Winter Consort. Solo appearances with orchestra include the symphonies of Toronto, Milwaukee, and Oregon, and he has also recorded for Delos as a Chamber Music Northwest artist.
