Combining the talents of six of America's finest brass players with classic compositions arranged with a modern flair, all performed on unique and sometimes antique instruments, the Pioneer Brass is a resplendent vision of a classic brass act.
In addition to a busy performance schedule, the Pioneer Brass is dedicated to working with students of all ages and abilities, presenting master classes, residencies, workshops and recitals.


PIONEER BRASS:

George Recker: C trumpet, C cornet, beuchel (or folded alphorn) in C, piccolo trumpet. Mr. Recker is principal trumpet with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival and Oregon Festival of American Music. He also plays with the Cabrillo Festival and is on the faculty of the University of Oregon.

Dean Comley: B-flat trumpet, B-flat cornet, alphorn in B-flat, piccolo trumpet, temple bell, disgruntled pedestrian shout. Mr. Comley is a freelance artist and plays trumpet with the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Symphony Pops. He has played for Ray Charles, Bob Hope and Natalie Cole, as well as the Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras.

Lawrence Johnson: horn, descant horn, alphorn in F, alto horn, alto cornet. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Oregon Symphony and Seattle Opera's Ring Cycle Orchestra. He is former solo horn and recording artist with Philharmonia Hungarica in Marl, West Germany, and is currently on the faculty of Portland State University.

Andrew Harris: tenor trombone, euphonium, alphorn in BB-flat, bass trumpet, temple bell. Mr. Harris plays frequently with the Oregon Symphony and is known for his solo performances on euphonium. As a freelance artist, Andy has performed with the Moody Blues and Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Gayle Neuman: bass trombone, tenor horn, alphorn in F, alto horn. Ms. Neuman is a vocal soloist and plays tenor horn with the Trail Band, and together with Philip co-directs the early ensembles De Organographia and the Oregon Renaissance Band.

Philip Neuman: C tuba, E-flat tuba, alphorn in FF, soprano trombone, bass trumpet, sopranino recorder, reed contrabass, slide reed subcontrabass, claves, arranger. Mr. Neuman is an award-winning composer, plays tuba with the Trail Band and together with Gayle builds Renaissance woodwinds and strings for an international clientele.
